in "the cay" why are the Germans bombing curcao?
ReplyDeleteperhaps because they want to wipe out all non-germans.
why are Phillip's parents not talking to each other?
because his mom wants to leave curcao.
did the germans fire the torpedo at the Hato?
possibly.
a wow I had was that on curcao they had no weapons at all. another wow I had was that after looking at the sun, Phillip became blind.
thanks for the helpful answers, and i think that Philip got blind by looking at the sun because it is so bright combined with the fact that the sun radiates U.V. rays, and a dike is a long wall used to prevent flooding.
Deleteso do i
DeleteIt's very hard to understand what Timothy sometimes.
DeleteI agree that some times it is rather hard to understand him at some points in the story, but most of the time it is pretty easy to decipher what he says.
Deleteanother question that just popped into my head is "did phillip's mom survive the sinking of the hato?
Deletealso "why does timothy not know anything about where his heritige country is or who his parents are?
His dad also is bairly at home, he is at work most of his time so I think Philip's mom is fustrated with him. Plu, like you said Philip's mom wants to leave curcao because of the war and Philip's safety.
DeletePlus I mean. :P Sorry.
DeletePhillip doesn't really remember his life in Viringa
Deletehe does not remember his life in Virginia because they moved to curaco when he was 7 and now he is 11.
Deleteemma, thanks for the helpful answers to the questions i had
DeleteHere are some of my questions I have for section 1:
DeleteWhat is the "koenoekoe" ? I was puzzled when I first read that.
What are the "Native Schooners"? I think they are a type of native group or tribe, but I want to know for sure.
Thank you for answering if you do.
if any one has any questions I can try to answer them. here are some questions I have that I will hopefully find the answers to in section 2, they aren't deep thinking questions but they are still questions.
Delete*are phillip and timothy going to be rescued, stranded, or stuck floating on a life raft in the ocean? I think they will probably get stranded. (i hope this gets sent to the top as a reply, because I hit reply to it, but it then moved to the bottom???)
I think we will find out later on in the book like at section 2 or 3 at the end. But I think another boat with his mom in it or a rescue boat will come and find them. Maybe the other passengers will be on raft boats and find them. There can be a lot of different answers but though's are some of my predictions.
DeleteWhy did phillips mother want to leave the island?
DeleteWhy did Phillip leave without his mother?
How did the submarines keep trying to kill the people of the island?
Did they want the land?
Will they get it?
based on the title they probably end up at a island.
DeleteI believe a "native schooner" is a group of natives that phillip and his friend like to bother in return, the natives throw fruit at them from their boats.
DeleteI didn't like how Phillip just looked at the sun and then he was blind :p
Deletekayla, phillip left the island with his mom, on board the Hato.
DeleteOh that make sence! so they are mad because they where botherd WOW!
DeletePhillip got blind because he got hit in the head.
Deleteone of my section 2 questions is: when phillip fals over board, what kind of sharks almost attacked him and timothy?
Delete*i think they are either black-tip reef sharks or great white sharks.
For "The man who loved clowns" why does Delrita want to be invisible? Why do people tease Punky? Where did the Gregory's go on page 18? Why are the Gregories so rude? On page 27: Does the dad hate Aunt Queenie or does he just like to mock her?
ReplyDeleteI think a really big wow was how ugly they described Punky: Moon-faced, almond-shaped eyes, doughy white skin, and a thick tongue that seemed to big for his mouth.
Sorry guys..(in my group) I MIGHT not be able to chat for an hour or two since I'm going to judo so I'll see if anyone has posted comments on the book we're reading and I'll blog later.

I'm back....... Is anyone from my group gonna blog?!?! Atid
DeleteWhy does Avanelle follow Delrita?
DeleteMaybe Avanelle thinks that they are friends.
I have the same questions as you :P
Are you Happy? :)
DeleteNOT REALLY
DeleteI think Delrita wants to be invisible because she doesn't like to make friends with other people or she just doesn't like it when people laugh or run away from Punky and most of the kids in school or those kids
DeleteI agree with Charlie Benjamin .. Delrita wants to be invisible because she does not like to make friends with other people I had the same answer.
Delete;D
DeleteFor even if it kills me this is what I think for the sec

DeleteThe Giver- What is a Nurturer?
ReplyDeleteDoes the book take place in the futute?
WOW- Jonas Glared at her, he didn't like how she mentioned his eyes-page 20
Nurturer is apparently a job of taking care of newbork childs.
DeleteAnd I'm not sure about the timeline for this cause in some sentences like "mine was called a bear" saying it's "called" a bear it means he doesn't know what a bear is. And the job system and laws seem different also.
I think that the timeline might be the future because their technology seems very futureistic and I like your wow jaz. Also does anyone know where they go when they r 'released'???
DeleteMan this book is weird, according to the back it is a "perfect world" where there are no wars or whatever, that does seem right for now. It seems like a community that is completely devoid of emotion, those that have them are dicussed orally and publically as said in Cahpter 1. Those that are released I have no idea about, but is apparantly ones who broke the rules. Somehow the characters don't know what an animal is, they have stuffies in the shape of them and know their names but have never actually been taught of it. The laws and ceremonies does in a way make sense but are very abnormal. A time is not actually given as far as I see but it's probably not relevant. They seem to not have cars, that provokes the question: are bicycles in this book are as important as towels in hitchiking?
Delete@Luna, In the book Jonas was talking about an elder being released, and he said that no one really knows where thay go, but they go through a door. I think that its like they die but but they decide when to.
DeleteFor even if it kills me here are my questions
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't Melanie try to make new friends?
Well it's probably because she doesn't know what to talk about.
Why does Melanie want to be so skinny?
I really don't know why but maybe because it makes her feel good about herself.
For the Giver :)
ReplyDeleteQ:Why were there only aloud one femaile and one male per family?
Q:Why does it say "a seven" it doesnt sound like an age to me ?
Q: Is everyone adopted?
Q: do you keep the same bike for your whole life after your nine?
This are allthe questions i have so far i really enjoy this book so far its a little confusing to be but i think it will clear up when i read further.
I think they sort everyone by age group.
DeleteYes, it seems like they're all adopted.
I'm not completely sure, but they keep they same bike after they're Nine.
I'm not sure about the first question though.
Have you gotten any Wow! stickies?
There are only one male and one female beause of the rules of the communtiy, of course it doesn't make sense though. For them they categorize people into age groups, and apparantly all their birthdays are on December so they all have one big ceremony, that's a rule too. Yeah everyone's adopted. I really don't think that the bike is the most important thing in the book.
DeleteHomestar Runner
But why would they not allow another male or female? What's wrong with having more than two? What are your Wow! stickies?
Deletei havent finished the section yet and so far i dont have a wow :P and yeah i dont get that either why cant they have two females or two males it doesnt make sense to me ??
Deletethey live in Sameness where everything is supposedly "perfect" so by having more than two kids in a family unit they might think it too much trouble to take care of three kids therefore making it not perfect which it can't be
DeleteI think that they want a "perfect" community, one with no crime or fighting. If everyone has the same thing and amount of family members, no one will be considered different.
DeleteIn "The Giver", why do they have Ceremonies for age groups?
ReplyDeleteWhy is there a rule that only allows two children- one male, one female- to each family unit?
Why is the Twelve Ceremony the last ceremony?
Why would age not be important after Twelve?
Maybe they think they shouldn't keep track of their age anymore because preparation for adult life and training in their Assignment is more important, and age doesn't matter.
I think that they have the one male and one female rule so no one will feel different, The feel that I'm getting from the book is that everyone in the community is the same.
DeleteWhy wouldn't they want anyone to be unique though? It's weird that they all have the same birthday during the Ceremony...
DeleteI think that it's the head of the community that wants them to be the same, they think thats what they want. Thats what I inferred from Jonas's narrating.
DeleteI think that they want a "perfect" community. They want no crime or fighting because people are different. They may also want no poverty so if everyone has the same things no one will be considered poor.
Delete12 is the last one cuz after that theyre adults and they work the rest of their lives til they die.
DeleteQ: why does the mom wanna move?
ReplyDeleteBecause of the war and she thinks it's too dangerous in curaçao
Deletetwo things, you are supposed to converse under the first person in your group to post a blog (see at the top for our conversations), and too and on to Winnie's, the mom also misses living in Virginia.
Deletethanks Jessica, that really helps us answer some of our questions
DeleteThanks Jess
Deleteso, does any one have ANY unanswered questions that they would like to have answered before we end section 1?
DeleteWhat does appealed mean?
DeleteFor the response do we have to write the plot/summary?
Deleteappealed means pleased. and we have to write the plot/summary for the response. can we also please start blogging at the top again (where we were blogging before) when we start section 2?
DeleteThanks and ok let's blog up there then
DeleteFor "The man who loved clowns" Here are my questions
ReplyDeleteWhy does Delrita want to be invisible? ( I got an answer )
Why does Delrita and her dad hate aunt Queenie?
Why doesn't Delrita like the new girl?
:)
Okay, but why would the community not want anyone to be different? I don't see anything wrong with that...
ReplyDeleteSorry I meant to reply to Laura on my comment, on "The Giver", but it didn't work.
DeleteMaybe they don't want anyone to be singled out. I'm not saying thats exactly what the want but that is the feeling I'm getting from the rules we have heard about so far.
DeleteI guess so. Jaz, if you were in this book would you like being in this, 'perfect world'? Why or why not? I'm just curious.
DeleteI would not because you would be the same as every one and no one would really have their own identity or be their own person. there is also way to many stupid rules and laws.
Delete"The Giver" Questions
ReplyDeleteWhy does this community have no cars?
Are bycicles only transportation in here?
-yes
Why do they "give" assingnments and not let people choose their own?
Connections..
um...
well this whole "assignment giving" part reminded me of North Korea.. their communist government doesn't let their people choose jobs.
I think they would have no transportation besides bicycles because they wouldn't have to travel anywhere far.
DeleteI'm not sure why they wouldn't allow anyone to have their own choices though... It doesn't sound like a "perfect world" to me like it says in the back of the book...
I think they don't let people choose their own jobs so that thay don't have too many people working at one place.
Deletewell they study each person then choose a job for them that fits their attitude, abilities etc. by doing this they think they're giving them the "perfect" job that they'll be happy doing
DeleteWell when Jonas was first selected he didn't seem very happy. In fact he thought they had selected wrong.
Delete"The Man Who Loved Clowns"
ReplyDeleteWOW - The way they described Punky made me think that he looked wierd.
QUOTE - "He looked like anybody else who had a Down's syndrome- moon-faced, with almond-shaped eyes, doughty white skin, and a thick tongue that seemed too big for his mouth".
Turns out he just looked like this...
http://www.grinterplacefriends.bravepages.com/clowns.jpg
this picture was used in another book cover of the same book!
WOW - They asked wierd questions in standard IQ tests.
QUOTE - "The school gave him a standard IQ test for twelve-year-olds, and he failed miserably. One of the questions were 'How do you describe the handle of a knife?' I'm thirty-seven years old, reasonably intelligent, and I'm not sure I could describe the handle of a knife well enough to pass an IQ test!"
QUESTION - How come they let Punky do whatever he wants? pg.30
ATTEMPTED ANSWER - They're trying to give Punky some minutes to himself
QUESTION - What's a Down's syndrome?
ANSWER - Down syndrome (DS), also called Trisomy 21, is a condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, both mentally and physically. It affects about 1 in every 800 babies born in the United States.
The physical features and medical problems associated with Down syndrome can vary widely from child to child. While some kids with DS need a lot of medical attention, others lead healthy lives.
Though Down syndrome can't be prevented, it can be detected before a child is born. The health problems that may go along with DS can be treated, and many resources are available to help kids and their families who are living with the condition.
http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/genetic/down_syndrome.html
I like your blog and how you atempted the awnsers for your first question I think DS means like something is wrong with your speaking and you cant talk very well.
DeleteThank you for posting a blog of what DS means (: Now I know what it means, Thanks :D
DeleteGreat questions and opinions. Even though I have the same while I was reading today I'd like to add that I like how you put more info on DS and you gave URL's to other sites to look on.
ReplyDelete:D
Thank you! You had great questions too!! (: and also opinions.
DeleteWow melinda was calm when her sister yelled
ReplyDeleteQuestion why does melinda volenteer at the hospital?
Do you mean Melanie? I think she volunteer at the hospital because she wants to help others.
DeleteIn even if it kills me why is she making herself so skinny? It's so unhealthy for her and it's just to look better.
ReplyDeleteI really do not understand why people do this to themselves? Please reply to me people in my group.
in the giver i don't get why they've created this Sameness that has no colour, pain or anything like that. sure its practical but its so boring. mood=confused
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure either, alot of events in this book are left un-explained
DeleteQuite a strange book... I wouldn't exactly call this a "perfect world", in my opinion. They have no choices and they are all the same. They should've given more explanation because it's confusing.
Deletewell their not necessarily left unexplained because we have only read one section they will probably explain later on in the book.
Delete"The man who loved clowns"
ReplyDeleteWow, pg 39: She actually has to put pills under Punky's tongue.
Quote:"Yeah, Mom, I know I'm supposed to put the pills under Punky's tongue.
Question, pg 38: What was so funny about the joke?
Quote:"Come on, get up, sleepyhead." I rolled out from under the cover and sat like a zombie on the edge of the bed. "Will you carry my eyes downstairs?" I mumbled. "I cant't see the step in the morning."
Attempted answer: It's a silly questions and it sounds funny.
Question, pg 43: Why is the "bratty Gregory kid" always spying on Punky?
Quote:"Did you get a new radio?" someone asked, and I spun around to see the bratty Gregory kid spying on us.
Attempted answer: He probably has nothing to do or he overheard Punky singing.
Question, pg 50: Why didn't Delrita tell Punky about the automatic doors?
Quote: The stores big door opened automatically when we stepped on the mat. Punky never could figure out how the door knew we were coming and it always made him giggle.
Attempted answer: Her parents probably told her it's a secret or she just thinks Punky will figure out after a while.
On your Question, pg 38:
DeleteIt's sort of funny because she is asking for her to carry her eyes downstairs because she can't see the steps in the morning and it isn't really possible to carry someones eyes, but Delrita was probably kidding anyways.
Question pg 43:
Marcus (bratty Gregory kid) spies on Punky because he thinks of Punky as a source of amusement.
I see you added quotes as examples. :)
I feel bad for Delrita because she has no friends and she is invisible meaning that know one really knows shes there. I think the book is great so far and its hard to stop reading. Question is that when Punky and Uncle Bert encounter why are they so rude to eachother like they were arguing over Aunt Queenie saying "My girl!" and "You pretty girl." One of my wows is that when it was describing Punky it was saying that his skin is really white and a tongue too big for his mouth.
DeleteI like your wow since I would also be disgusted If I saw a moon-faced, almond shaped eyes, doughy white skin and a tongue that seemed to big for his mouth.
DeleteI agree with your Wow. When I was reading and I came across that part I was like "wow" And I feel bad for Punky for looking like that.. and having Down sydrome
DeleteNicolette
ReplyDelete(Pit Pony)
I feel scared because Willie might run away!
Even if it kills me:
ReplyDeleteWhy would she starve herself? Well I don't exactly know but I think that she just wants attention and to be popular.
My wow is that she would go to the point of starving herself to be skinny.
Nicolette

My questions are:
What is a schooner?
What is a ditty?
What does coaxingly mean?
Pit Pony
Delete(question)
what's black smith?
why does he likes horses so much?
why didn' he want to become a miner?
why his father wanted him to become a miner than anything else?
Even if it kills me
ReplyDeletequetions why does melaine want to be thin?
Why is she obssed with losing weight?
What is a counsume?
Why is she obsessed with being thin?
Because she thinks that she needs to be perfect at everything including dieting.
DeleteI also think that she wants more friends and to be more popular and she thinks that losing weight is the only way to be popular.
"The Giver"
ReplyDeleteWhere is "Elsewhere"?
What country/year is it?
Why was Jonas skipped?
What are the pills for the "Stirrings"?
Why do they have Dream and Feeling rituals?
Why is age unimportant after age 12?
Why are there ceremonies for ages 1-12?
Do they not know their birthparents?
How did the apple change?
I was going to use a wow but Justin used the one i was going to use about the apple so this is a substitute.
DeleteWow: "'Twenty,' he heard her voice say clearly. 'Pierre.' She skipped me, Jonas thought, stunned." Pg 57
Somewhere else.
DeleteSometime in the future, no time was given.
I don't know.
Special pills, anti- depressants probably.
I don't know.
Because there are no more ceremonies after that.
Because they get something special for each year.
Guess not.
In a special appley way.
Wow: p 24, "But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had- well, this was the part he couldn't understand- the apple had changed."
Deletea special appley way?
Deleteyeah i was gonna use that!!! >:o oh well -_-
DeleteApples are very special, didn't you know that?
Deleteyes, just like me :)
DeleteIn "The Giver"
ReplyDeleteAfter the ceremony of 12, why do they only have work hours and no recreation hours?
Why does everything have to be done on the same day for everyone?( eg. everyone gets a bike at their ceremony of 8)
Why does nobody get to choose their own job?
Why do the elders choose for them?
Why is there no individuality for any of the people?
Why does age not matter after 12?
I think that the people in charge want a perfect community; no crime and no fighting.
I think they don't care about age because they have the same job for their life and nothing ever changes.
Because apparantly they aren't kids anymore.
DeleteBecause of "Sameness", and the fact that all the kids are born on December.
Because the leaders are afraid that someone would choose a bad job and not be happy.
Because the elders are wise old men that know how to pick stuff.
"Sameness"
They're adults after age 12.
Have fun reading!
cuz theyre adults that don't like fun.
Deletebecause everything has to be the same
because the counsel supposedly chooses the perfect job for everyone
because theyre elders who supposedly know better duh jkjk :P
because everythings the same
cuz theyre adults that work til they did
yup you pretty much guessed right.
Apparently in this community they always have a ceremony until they are twelve
DeleteI think they don't let people choose their jobs because there might be many people who wants one job?
@Jim they get their bike at 9 and i agree with you and the replies before me.
DeleteThe Giver
ReplyDeleteWhat would the "painful" training of the receiver for Jonas be?
Did everyone get an assignment they wanted?
-everyone liked what they got (eg.Asher)
When someone got released, does it mean that person would die?
(Kinda reminded me of mercy killing)
who is the giver
Deletehe's superman who flies around the world saving ppl by giving them superfruit. jkjk hes like the protagonist along with jonas.
Deletehaha jessica! @kay i think that jonas may have to go on long journeys and meet different people and maybe he has to see and do things no one would do in their wildest dreams.
Deletei think that everyone did get an assignment they liked because the Elders observe them from the age of 9 and as they said in the book only a few people have ever not liked their assignment.
I have the same idea about the releasing but am not sure hopefully they will explain later on in the book.
actually nearer the end of sec 2 it explains that Jonas has to receive horrible memories like war, loneliness, starvation and phys pain so that the ppl in the community don't deal with them becuz of this he suffers and yes when ppl are released they're killed for different reasons some being as stupid as there being twins and only keeping one
DeleteDoes mr.tanner die?
ReplyDeleteNo we already told you this it says that he'll be alright.
DeleteCameron
ReplyDeleteThe book i'm reading is My Side of The Mountain
Questions: What does stroobly mean?
How did he get the name for the falcon?
What is the givers name from the book the giver
ReplyDeleteWow (section 1): "this was much of the same: the fragile skin, the soothing water, the gentle motion of his hand, slippery with soap." pg 30
ReplyDeleteWasn't he saying the old woman's skin was the same with Gabriel's?
Deletewho is gabriel
Deletekk who's barney?! seriously youre so random!

Delete"The Man Who Loved Clowns"
ReplyDeleteQuestions:As I was reading about Punky having the possibility of dying and that Punky loves clowns I began to think about the title of the book... I was wondering if Punky might die in the end? I think he will since they said he might only live as long as forty (Punky's 35) and they said on pg 39 that Punky could have another spell with his heart.
I also have another question when I was reading on pg 73 which was why didn't take Punky's insult insult seriously if it was trueQuote: He laughed, patted Mrs. Shackleford on the tummy, and said, "You're fat."
DeleteI had the same question as you when Punky Said the mrs.Sackleford was fat and that was also my wow cause I think thats rude.
DeleteWhat happens after chapter 2
ReplyDeleteread it for your self.
DeleteHere are my questions for "The man who loved clowns"
ReplyDelete1. Why was the guys name Tree? Was it a nickname?
2. Why did the girl named "Birdie" Just call her self Birdie?
3. Why did the new girl stop stalking Delrita?
4. Did Delrita want Punky invisible like her?
Q: why does the apple and the people look different to Jonas's eye?
ReplyDeleteA: i think because he has the eye of the seer.
Q: Is there a birthfather?
Q:why do they 'release' kids/people who have health problems or are odd?
A: I think because they want the community to have a 'sameness' and orderly to it and no odd people.
Q: where do the Elders go when they are released?
Q: What are the pills?
A: as far as the book goes i think the pills are something to take to prevent the stirrings.
Your first Question: Jonas is startting to see colour
DeleteSecond question: in the book they only mention birth mothers but i think there has to be a birth father
I agree with Jaz. there should be a birthfather...
DeleteThe thing about Jonas seeing stuff change I agree with Luna it must be the "eyes of the receiver" thing..
Where do elders go when released? My idea is.. either sent somewhere or mercy killed.

"The Man Who Loved Clowns", Section 2
ReplyDeleteI was really saddened when I read that Delrita's parents died. It made me question when the woodcarver was fine with the trade that Punky made. I thought the red socks that Punky had were too small for the woodcarver but I could be wrong, besides Punky's a grownup. I don't know why Delrita would let Punky walk home with her. If I were her I would just tell the uncle or the aunt, If that didn't work she could just take his trousers and hide them like the nurses did in the hospital.
I was very shocked when i heard Delritas partents died. It was very sad to me when Delrita hadnt finished her carving for him to see before he died but Delrita learned from Punky to not be invisible and spread her wings and fly!
Deleteoh and I meant punky who died not her parents haha
DeleteWell I think that maybe the wood carver knew that Delritas parents died before because if i was right maybe he felt bad for them and just acepted the trade. I feel really bad for Delrita and Punky very much because now Im guessing that Aunt Queenie and Uncle Bert have to take care of the children. I also feel scared for Punky because it looks like hes gonna die. Because his forehead was sweating and his heart was pounding really fast so i might think punky might die too il guess we will have to find out.
ReplyDeleteOne of my wows is of how much shock Delrita still is in. And one thought i wondered about Punky. Is he going to die too because when Delrita checked Punkys heart beat it was really fast and his forehead was sweating so maybe i think.
DeleteGreat questions, wows and attempted answers but you guys are supposed to be blogging under section 2. Be sure you follow the next homework directions when we start section 3.
