  1. in "the cay" why are the Germans bombing curcao?
perhaps because they want to wipe out all non-germans.

why are Phillip's parents not talking to each other?
because his mom wants to leave curcao.

did the germans fire the torpedo at the Hato?
    possibly.

a wow I had was that on curcao they had no weapons at all. another wow I had was that after looking at the sun, Phillip became blind.

    1. thanks for the helpful answers, and i think that Philip got blind by looking at the sun because it is so bright combined with the fact that the sun radiates U.V. rays, and a dike is a long wall used to prevent flooding.

    4. another question that just popped into my head is "did phillip's mom survive the sinking of the hato?

also "why does timothy not know anything about where his heritige country is or who his parents are?

    5. His dad also is bairly at home, he is at work most of his time so I think Philip's mom is fustrated with him. Plu, like you said Philip's mom wants to leave curcao because of the war and Philip's safety.

    9. Here are some of my questions I have for section 1:

What is the "koenoekoe" ? I was puzzled when I first read that.

What are the "Native Schooners"? I think they are a type of native group or tribe, but I want to know for sure.

Thank you for answering if you do.

    10. if any one has any questions I can try to answer them. here are some questions I have that I will hopefully find the answers to in section 2, they aren't deep thinking questions but they are still questions.

*are phillip and timothy going to be rescued, stranded, or stuck floating on a life raft in the ocean? I think they will probably get stranded. (i hope this gets sent to the top as a reply, because I hit reply to it, but it then moved to the bottom???)

    11. I think we will find out later on in the book like at section 2 or 3 at the end. But I think another boat with his mom in it or a rescue boat will come and find them. Maybe the other passengers will be on raft boats and find them. There can be a lot of different answers but though's are some of my predictions.

    12. Why did phillips mother want to leave the island?
Why did Phillip leave without his mother?
How did the submarines keep trying to kill the people of the island?
      Did they want the land?
      Will they get it?

      Delete
    13. based on the title they probably end up at a island.

    14. I believe a "native schooner" is a group of natives that phillip and his friend like to bother in return, the natives throw fruit at them from their boats.

  2. For "The man who loved clowns" why does Delrita want to be invisible? Why do people tease Punky? Where did the Gregory's go on page 18? Why are the Gregories so rude? On page 27: Does the dad hate Aunt Queenie or does he just like to mock her?

I think a really big wow was how ugly they described Punky: Moon-faced, almond-shaped eyes, doughy white skin, and a thick tongue that seemed to big for his mouth.

WOW- Jonas Glared at her, he didn't like how she mentioned his eyes-page 20

    1. Nurturer is apparently a job of taking care of newbork childs.
And I'm not sure about the timeline for this cause in some sentences like "mine was called a bear" saying it's "called" a bear it means he doesn't know what a bear is. And the job system and laws seem different also.

      Delete
    2. I think that the timeline might be the future because their technology seems very futureistic and I like your wow jaz. Also does anyone know where they go when they r 'released'???

    3. Man this book is weird, according to the back it is a "perfect world" where there are no wars or whatever, that does seem right for now. It seems like a community that is completely devoid of emotion, those that have them are dicussed orally and publically as said in Cahpter 1. Those that are released I have no idea about, but is apparantly ones who broke the rules. Somehow the characters don't know what an animal is, they have stuffies in the shape of them and know their names but have never actually been taught of it. The laws and ceremonies does in a way make sense but are very abnormal. A time is not actually given as far as I see but it's probably not relevant. They seem to not have cars, that provokes the question: are bicycles in this book are as important as towels in hitchiking?

      Delete
    4. @Luna, In the book Jonas was talking about an elder being released, and he said that no one really knows where thay go, but they go through a door. I think that its like they die but but they decide when to.

  5. For even if it kills me here are my questions
Why doesn't Melanie try to make new friends?
Well it's probably because she doesn't know what to talk about.
Why does Melanie want to be so skinny?
I really don't know why but maybe because it makes her feel good about herself.

  6. For the Giver :)
Q:Why were there only aloud one femaile and one male per family?
Q:Why does it say "a seven" it doesnt sound like an age to me ?
    Q: Is everyone adopted?
Q: do you keep the same bike for your whole life after your nine?
This are allthe questions i have so far i really enjoy this book so far its a little confusing to be but i think it will clear up when i read further.

    1. I think they sort everyone by age group.
Yes, it seems like they're all adopted.
I'm not completely sure, but they keep they same bike after they're Nine.
I'm not sure about the first question though.
Have you gotten any Wow! stickies?

    2. There are only one male and one female beause of the rules of the communtiy, of course it doesn't make sense though. For them they categorize people into age groups, and apparantly all their birthdays are on December so they all have one big ceremony, that's a rule too. Yeah everyone's adopted. I really don't think that the bike is the most important thing in the book.

    4. i havent finished the section yet and so far i dont have a wow :P and yeah i dont get that either why cant they have two females or two males it doesnt make sense to me ??

      Delete
    5. they live in Sameness where everything is supposedly "perfect" so by having more than two kids in a family unit they might think it too much trouble to take care of three kids therefore making it not perfect which it can't be

      Delete
    6. I think that they want a "perfect" community, one with no crime or fighting. If everyone has the same thing and amount of family members, no one will be considered different.

      Delete
  7. In "The Giver", why do they have Ceremonies for age groups?
Why is there a rule that only allows two children- one male, one female- to each family unit?
Why is the Twelve Ceremony the last ceremony?
Why would age not be important after Twelve?
Maybe they think they shouldn't keep track of their age anymore because preparation for adult life and training in their Assignment is more important, and age doesn't matter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that they have the one male and one female rule so no one will feel different, The feel that I'm getting from the book is that everyone in the community is the same.

      Delete
    2. Why wouldn't they want anyone to be unique though? It's weird that they all have the same birthday during the Ceremony...

      Delete
    3. I think that it's the head of the community that wants them to be the same, they think thats what they want. Thats what I inferred from Jonas's narrating.

      Delete
    4. I think that they want a "perfect" community. They want no crime or fighting because people are different. They may also want no poverty so if everyone has the same things no one will be considered poor.

Are bycicles only transportation in here?
    -yes

Why do they "give" assingnments and not let people choose their own?

    Connections..
    um...
well this whole "assignment giving" part reminded me of North Korea.. their communist government doesn't let their people choose jobs.

    1. I think they would have no transportation besides bicycles because they wouldn't have to travel anywhere far.
I'm not sure why they wouldn't allow anyone to have their own choices though... It doesn't sound like a "perfect world" to me like it says in the back of the book...

      Delete
    2. I think they don't let people choose their own jobs so that thay don't have too many people working at one place.

      Delete
    3. well they study each person then choose a job for them that fits their attitude, abilities etc. by doing this they think they're giving them the "perfect" job that they'll be happy doing

WOW - The way they described Punky made me think that he looked wierd.
QUOTE - "He looked like anybody else who had a Down's syndrome- moon-faced, with almond-shaped eyes, doughty white skin, and a thick tongue that seemed too big for his mouth".

Turns out he just looked like this...

    http://www.grinterplacefriends.bravepages.com/clowns.jpg

this picture was used in another book cover of the same book!

WOW - They asked wierd questions in standard IQ tests.
QUOTE - "The school gave him a standard IQ test for twelve-year-olds, and he failed miserably. One of the questions were 'How do you describe the handle of a knife?' I'm thirty-seven years old, reasonably intelligent, and I'm not sure I could describe the handle of a knife well enough to pass an IQ test!"

QUESTION - How come they let Punky do whatever he wants? pg.30
ATTEMPTED ANSWER - They're trying to give Punky some minutes to himself

    QUESTION - What's a Down's syndrome?
ANSWER - Down syndrome (DS), also called Trisomy 21, is a condition in which extra genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops, both mentally and physically. It affects about 1 in every 800 babies born in the United States.

The physical features and medical problems associated with Down syndrome can vary widely from child to child. While some kids with DS need a lot of medical attention, others lead healthy lives.

Though Down syndrome can't be prevented, it can be detected before a child is born. The health problems that may go along with DS can be treated, and many resources are available to help kids and their families who are living with the condition.

Wow, pg 39: She actually has to put pills under Punky's tongue.
Quote:"Yeah, Mom, I know I'm supposed to put the pills under Punky's tongue.

Question, pg 38: What was so funny about the joke?
Quote:"Come on, get up, sleepyhead." I rolled out from under the cover and sat like a zombie on the edge of the bed. "Will you carry my eyes downstairs?" I mumbled. "I cant't see the step in the morning."
Attempted answer: It's a silly questions and it sounds funny.

Question, pg 43: Why is the "bratty Gregory kid" always spying on Punky?
Quote:"Did you get a new radio?" someone asked, and I spun around to see the bratty Gregory kid spying on us.
Attempted answer: He probably has nothing to do or he overheard Punky singing.

Question, pg 50: Why didn't Delrita tell Punky about the automatic doors?
Quote: The stores big door opened automatically when we stepped on the mat. Punky never could figure out how the door knew we were coming and it always made him giggle.
Attempted answer: Her parents probably told her it's a secret or she just thinks Punky will figure out after a while.

    1. On your Question, pg 38:
It's sort of funny because she is asking for her to carry her eyes downstairs because she can't see the steps in the morning and it isn't really possible to carry someones eyes, but Delrita was probably kidding anyways.

      Question pg 43:
Marcus (bratty Gregory kid) spies on Punky because he thinks of Punky as a source of amusement.

I see you added quotes as examples. :)

Why do the elders choose for them?
Why is there no individuality for any of the people?
Why does age not matter after 12?

  31. Q: why does the apple and the people look different to Jonas's eye?
A: i think because he has the eye of the seer.

    Q: Is there a birthfather?

Q:why do they 'release' kids/people who have health problems or are odd?
A: I think because they want the community to have a 'sameness' and orderly to it and no odd people.

Q: where do the Elders go when they are released?

    Q: What are the pills?
A: as far as the book goes i think the pills are something to take to prevent the stirrings.

    2. I agree with Jaz. there should be a birthfather...

The thing about Jonas seeing stuff change I agree with Luna it must be the "eyes of the receiver" thing..

Where do elders go when released? My idea is.. either sent somewhere or mercy killed.

He hunts for food and uses deer skin to keep him warm and can make a fire. He has made a hook using twigs and string. Later he had met somebody named Bill who helped him make a wonderful fire. Then he had found what he had been looking for all this time, his grandfathers mountain well waht's left of it. He is trying to find a good home well tree to live in. Now he has made a house in a big tree and lives in it. He knows where to find food and water. Something has happened he has one problem how can he bring the water back. He met a lady who asked him to pick some strawberries. Now he has found a beautiful bird and is trying to catch a dear.

  38. "The Man Who Loved Clowns", Section 2

I was really saddened when I read that Delrita's parents died. It made me question when the woodcarver was fine with the trade that Punky made. I thought the red socks that Punky had were too small for the woodcarver but I could be wrong, besides Punky's a grownup. I don't know why Delrita would let Punky walk home with her. If I were her I would just tell the uncle or the aunt, If that didn't work she could just take his trousers and hide them like the nurses did in the hospital.

    1. I was very shocked when i heard Delritas partents died. It was very sad to me when Delrita hadnt finished her carving for him to see before he died but Delrita learned from Punky to not be invisible and spread her wings and fly!

    2. oh and I meant punky who died not her parents haha

  39. Well I think that maybe the wood carver knew that Delritas parents died before because if i was right maybe he felt bad for them and just acepted the trade. I feel really bad for Delrita and Punky very much because now Im guessing that Aunt Queenie and Uncle Bert have to take care of the children. I also feel scared for Punky because it looks like hes gonna die. Because his forehead was sweating and his heart was pounding really fast so i might think punky might die too il guess we will have to find out.
