Begin blogging section 2

I love reading your conversations.  Some of you are really making an effort to solve your own confusions when you are reading and offer others answers to their questions.
Continue to ask each other questions:
- questions that help you understand your novel better, questions about vocabulary, questions about the plot or what a character is doing or question your reading group's ideas.
Continue to offer your opinions and discuss what you are thinking.  Continue to guess what is happening and check back to confirm if you were right.  Remember to continue to refer to section 1.
Feel free to read other novel blogs but you are only responding right now to your own reading group.

    13. I found out a great definition for the "cay". It is from "Dictionary". The Cay : a small low island or bank composed of sand and coral fragments, esp in the Caribbean area. Also called key.

It is pronounced "key" like how we say it in English.

Wow - Punky's technique for buying items is to trade it with something he has without the owners knowing it.

Wow - Punky's real name is Richard.

Question - Why do they call Richard "Punky"
Attempted Answer - It's probably just a funny nickname

I know this post is incomplete so I'll post something later.

    2. "The Man Who Loved Clowns", Section 2

I was really saddened when I read that Delrita's parents died. It made me question when the woodcarver was fine with the trade that Punky made. I thought the red socks that Punky had were too small for the woodcarver but I could be wrong, besides Punky's a grownup. I don't know why Delrita would let Punky walk home with her. If I were her I would just tell the uncle or the aunt, If that didn't work she could just take his trousers and hide them like the nurses did in the hospital.

    4. I couldn't believe that Delrita's parents died.

      Who is the "old" baby?
Att. Answer: Probably one of the "mop-tops"
      Why does Punky steal items?
Att. Answer: He thinks that if he can trade it for something, he can get it.

Something I noticed was it says Punky's real name is "Richard Hollaway"

    5. I also couldn't believe that delrita's parents died too!! :-(

    7. Question-Why was Delrita seeming so positive about making Herkimer
quote-He'd have a long, graceful, unbroken neck and beautiful outstretched wings.
Reason-At first Punky said "Sam, Shirley. Come home." them her hands trembled and she thought about her dad saying: Let him spread his wings and fly.

      Question-Who's Cooper?
Quote-"I'm going to be late for PE class, and Cooper can really be a bear."
Attempted Answer-Cooper is probably the PE class teacher.

Wow-Punky only spills the last half of the soap.
Reason-I always thought Punky spilled the whole soap container, but I wonder how he know there's only half full of soap in the container.

Answer to previous question - Delrita always thought she was invisible.

When reading the first section I had the question that I was wondering if Delrita wanted to be invisible or she just thought she was invisible. Now I figured it out since on page 107 it said she wanted to be invisible for the first time.

    1) Why is there no such thing as colours anymore?
A: The people made that choice when they converted in Sameness.

    2) Why is choosing their mates and jobs seem crazy to them?

    3) Why won't the old receiver tell Jonas his name? (instead he tell him to call him the Giver)

    4) Why is Jonas not able to describe the way things change for him?
A: I think because he is starting to colours and before this he had no idea what colour was. In fact the entire community doesn't know.

  17. Questions for 'The Giver'
How will the Giver transfer memories to Jonas?
-I think it will happen by the Giver touching him.
Why is the Giver in so much pain?
-I think he is reliving a memory of pain and suffering.
Why can't everyone see all the colours?
-I think they want everything to be the same so no one would be individualized by liking different colours.
Why is Jonas not allowed to talk about his job or share his dreams with his family?
-I think for him to be the receiver, he must be the only one who holds the memories of before.
During the ceremony of 12, why did they skip number 19?
-I think they have a special job for Jonas to be assigned to.
How did Jonas transfer the memory to Gabe?
-I think that Gabe also has the qualities of the receiver and may be the next receiver after Jonas.
Why did the Giver decide to give Jonas a disturbing memory that day?
-I think he started with pleasant memories and worked his way over to the unpleasant ones.
Are there actually other communities, or is there just the one Jonas is in?
-I think there are other communities, but they are just seperate and uninvolved with each other.

  18. THE GIVER.
Jonas goes to work for and the Giver gives Jonas the memory colour. I'm wondering is everything black and white ? that was the biggest question the other question i had was
    Q : Why doesn't it snow ? pg 80
A : because the climate control. pg 83
I dont have a lot of questions for section, I'm not finished yet.
however I do have a lot of connections and feelings for example when Jonas has his first day at work and he gets the memory of snow and sleding. I remember when i was a young girl going sleding down the hill at the park right near my house, the snow pilled high some were taller then me.
One more question that i've been wondering through the whole book is.......Is Fiona going to fall in love with Jonas personally i think she is but I'm not sure.
I really like this book so far and I'm super excited to finish ;)

    Questions:
    pg. 87, ch. 11 - Q:What is "The Giver"'s actual name?
pg. 74, ch. 10 - Q: Why does each household only have these books: a dictionary, and the thick community volume which contained descriptions of every office, factory, building, and committee, and the Book of Rules? Why no other books, like fiction?
    - Q: Do they have any other types of transportation besides bikes? Why/Why not?
    - Q: What exactly is the "change" he keeps seeing in the "seeing beyond"?
    A: Colours.
    - Q: Why is there no colours?
    A: Sameness.
    - Q: Why do they want everything to be the same? Why not different?
    - Q: Why would Jonas see red first? Why not a different colour, like blue or purple?
Attempted answer: Maybe because red is the first colour in the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, etc.
    - Q: Why would the seeing beyond happen differently to the Giver than it did to Jonas?

    Wow:
"Jonas has not been assigned," she informed the crowd, and his heart sank. Then she went on. "Jonas has been selected." He blinked. What did that mean? He felt a collective questioning stir from the audience. They, too, were puzzled. In a firm, commanding voice she announced, "Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory." Then he heard the gasp - the sudden intake of breath, drawn sharply in astonishment, by each of the seated citizens. - pg. 60, ch. 8

    1. Do you think people were envious of Jonas? Would that be a desirable job? What job would you like to have? I like your guess for why red would be the first colour that Jonas would see Cheska. Gabe does seem to be special...I agree with Jim.
